Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur
Underrated, underpriced, and genuinely liveable. The city that people plan to leave — and don’t.
Kuala Lumpur Guides
Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated long-term bases. The cost of living is low, the food scene is genuinely world-class, English is widely spoken, and Malaysia’s DE Rantau digital nomad visa makes it straightforward to stay legally. It lacks the glamour of Singapore and the chaos of Bangkok, which is precisely why people who actually live here tend to stay longer than they planned.

The most common comparison is with Singapore — a 45-minute flight away, roughly three times the cost. KL makes sense if you want proximity to Singapore’s business ecosystem without paying Singapore prices. Many people split time between the two. Bangkok is KL’s other natural neighbour — similar price point, different vibe. KL is quieter, more Muslim in character, and arguably better for long-term life; Bangkok has more nightlife and a bigger nomad scene. If you want island pace rather than city energy, Bali is a 2.5-hour flight away and a completely different proposition.
